Obtain Specimen Permit

According to 9 CFR 314.9(a) “Specimens of condemned or other inedible materials, including embryos and specimens of animals parasites, may be released for educational, research, or other nonfood purposes under a permit.” To obtain a permit, an application must be submitted to NCDA&CS Meat and Poultry Inspection Division. An application maybe submitted either electronically or by mail.

Items to consider before submitting the application:

*Permits will not be approved if the application is not filled out completely including specific amount of specimen needed.

*Permits will not be approved for items that can normally be purchased from an establishment.

*Permits may take 1-2 weeks for approval.

Steps to completing an application:

  1. Obtain permission from the management of a slaughterhouse under NCDA&CS MPID’s jurisdiction to collect the material you need. Document the establishment official's name that gave permission and the date/time of the conversation.
  2. Complete and submit either the electronic form or the printable hard copy.
